What type of cannabis strains/chemovars do migraine and chronic pain patients typically use? Well, I did 2 studies looking at this question. In collaboration with Tilray ‪@tilrayusa2225‬ a large Canadian medical cannabis company, we reviewed data from a large patient survey from patients in their registry. The first 5 slides are from the original 1st paper we published with this data (free download). The last 7 slides are from my Twitter feed highlighting the results of the 2nd follow-up study looking at this question again (abstract presented at American Headache Society scientific meeting and full manuscript coming). As you can see, the most commonly used chemovars were higher THC strains/ chemovars. Notably, THC causes the psychoactive qualities and the majority of the side effects seen with cannabis. Higher THC doses also increase tolerance which leads to needing higher doses and can also cause dependency. So these results should not be taken as recommendations, but rather interesting yet cautious observations to consider when talking with your doctor.
