For many enthusiasts, the Audi RS3 is the ultimate everyday performance car: compact, understated, devastatingly quick, and blessed with that unmistakable five-cylinder soundtrack. But with four main versions on the market – the original 8V, the facelifted 8V.2 with its legendary DAZA engine, the later OPF-equipped cars, and today’s 8Y – choosing the right one isn’t easy. Which version offers the best blend of performance, sound and tuning potential? And which makes the best base for future upgrades? Let’s dive in. Prefer to read? Under the bonnet sat the EA855 five-cylinder turbo (code CZGB), producing 367PS. With its iron block, smaller turbo and direct injection only, it delivered strong low-end punch and the loudest, rawest soundtrack of the lot. On the road, it was brutally quick – thanks to the DQ500 gearbox and Haldex all-wheel drive – easily cracking sub-4.5 second 0–62mph runs. But compared with later cars, the nose felt heavier and power delivery a little lazier. Tuning potential was decent, but limited by the turbo and fuelling setup. Still, the 8V remains the most affordable entry into RS3 ownership. With the right care – upgraded intercooler, valve cleaning (carbon build-up is common on DI-only engines), and regular gearbox/diff servicing – it’s a dependable daily that delivers classic RS3 character. In 2017, the facelifted RS3 changed everything. The new DAZA engine swapped the iron block for aluminium, shaving 26kg from the nose. It gained dual injection, an integrated exhaust manifold, and a bigger turbo. Power jumped to 400PS, torque hit harder across the rev range, and the car felt sharper, more agile, and far more responsive. The exhaust note also improved, especially with the RS Sports Exhaust – deeper, raspier, and more charismatic. For tuners, the DAZA is king. Stage 1 maps take it to 460–500bhp, hybrids push 600–700bhp, and with forged builds and upgraded fuelling, 1,000bhp RS3s exist today. Reliability also improved, with fewer carbon issues thanks to port injection. Beyond the usual injector wear and diff bearing noise, it’s a solid platform. No surprise then: DAZA-equipped RS3s are considered the holy grail. From 2019, emissions rules forced Audi to fit a petrol particulate filter (GPF/OPF). These late facelift cars, usually coded DNWA, looked the same and still made 400PS – but the exhaust note lost some drama. Crackles were tamed, idle was quieter, and that trademark howl felt muted. Performance remained identical, and tuning potential is still strong, though exhaust modifications are trickier thanks to MOT rules in the UK. For buyers wanting a newer, stealthier RS3 without paying DAZA prices, these cars make sense – especially well-specced Sport Editions. But in the eyes (and ears) of purists, the DAZA still wins. The latest RS3, the 8Y, arrived in 2021. Still powered by the five-cylinder EA855 evo (DNWC), output is around 400–407PS. On paper, not a huge leap – but the driving experience is transformed. The big news is the RS Torque Splitter: a twin-clutch rear axle that can actively shuffle torque side-to-side. Gone is the old “safe understeer” feel – the 8Y now rotates, feels rear-biased, and can even slide when provoked. It’s the most engaging RS3 to date. Like the OPF cars, it runs a particulate filter, and the MG1 ECU makes tuning harder (and more expensive). But once unlocked, Stage 1 gains are impressive, and the chassis can finally deploy all that power properly. Inside, it’s a big step up too – sharper digital cockpit, RS-specific displays, and aggressive styling with wider arches and functional aero. It feels every inch the modern super-hatch. Which RS3 Should You Buy? 8V Iron Block – Cheapest entry, loudest stock exhaust, but heavier and less tune-friendly. 8V.2 DAZA – The legend. Best mix of sound, weight, power and tuning potential. The enthusiast’s choice. DNWA OPF Cars – Slightly muted but newer, cheaper than DAZA, and still hugely capable. 8Y – Most advanced RS3 yet.
