How this small village is helping to preserve Madagascar's iconic biodiversity

Madagascar's forests are disappearing rapidly, primarily due to land clearing for agriculture, logging and other forms of habitat destruction. With around 80% of Malagasy people reliant on natural resources, the loss of these ecosystems threatens not only the island’s unique biodiversity but the well-being of local communities who rely on forest resources for food, fuel and income. In the face of these challenges, communities are joining a network of eco villages focused on protecting and restoring nature and improving livelihoods. Together with the Government of Madagascar, UNEP and the Global Environment Facility have plans to support 18 eco villages across the region.
