Emotions aside from facing their longest running rival, the Lobos found themselves battling a Hartnell program that was undefeated this season. The Lobos will keep the Presidents Cup on campus for a fifth straight year after Saturday’s 40-20 win in the 74th meeting, snapping Hartnell’s season opening six game winning streak. “Our goal coming into the game was to do a better job of tackling, eliminate the turnovers and stupid penalties,” Hartnell coach Matt Collins said. “We didn’t do any of that.” Having played most of the season with a roster of just 31 players — with a handful forced to go both ways, the Panthers have been the early season story of the year with their start. “It’s not an accident that they came in 6-0,” Palmer said. “Those kids play hard for coach Collins. I was glad the Lobos showed up in the second half.” Hartnell went into the game as one of just five teams left in the state of California undefeated, even earning a vote in the latest state ranking polls. It had also knocked off two of the reigning American Golden Coast Conference champions from last year in Merced and West Hills. The two-defending conference champion Lobos, who are 12-1 under Palmer in conference play in his three seasons, are trying to become the first team to win three straight titles. MPC has won back-to-back titles nine times over its seven plus decades of football. But it has never three-peated as conference champions. Both the Lobos and Hartnell will have byes next week before returning for the final three games of the season. The Panthers are already bowl eligible based on their six wins. “We’ll regroup and try and finish what we started,” Collins said. “But it does stretch things out. With our situation, we could use some extra recovery time.” A ball-hawking Lobos defense has been in rhythm for the last four weeks with three more interceptions, giving them 21 on the season. Ricky Weimer, Victor Villafuerte and Maurice Mathias’ three picks all led to MPC points, as it outscored Hartnell 27-7 in the second half. “I try my best not to memorize myself with stats until the end of the season,” Palmer said. “But I do focus on our pressure. If we’re applying pressure, good things are happening.” The Lobos recorded eight sacks, with Jabari Reynolds finishing with three. Staring at a 13-9 halftime deficit, the Lobos (5-2) answered by scoring the games next 20 points in the second half, with Miekael Booker connecting with Karim McCune and Cameron Brown for touchdowns. “The difference in the second half is we found the end zone,” Palmer said. ” We had some drive killers in the first half with turnovers and penalties.” Runs of 65 yards from Jesus Organista and 50 yards from Kieryus Boone put the Lobos in the red zone, where Boone rushed for a pair of touchdowns. “Hartnell plays an aggressive style of defense,” Collins said. “We found ways to exploit it. And our defense came around and caught some interceptions it had dropped in the first half.” While there were no pick sixes for MPC’s defense for the first time in four games, turnovers led to points for the offense. “The theme of the entire game was making plays,” Palmer said. A 9-yard touchdown pass from Adam Shaffer to Nathan Ortiz, coupled with a pair of field goals from Abraham Maciel staked Hartnell to a 13-9 halftime lead. “The thought was we were beating ourselves, yet still had the lead,” Collins said. “If we went out and played better, we felt we had a shot to win this game. We’re a resilient group.” #Under the Radar #Football Highlights #Deestroying #TravisHunter #TravisHunter #DeionSanders #Deion Sanders #ajgreene #Overtime #Overtimefootball #UnderArmour #Nike #high school football, #top highlights, #youth football, #MaterDei, #best players, #highschoolrunning back #top #quarterbacks, #hardesthitting #highschoolsports #footballshorts player, #Colorado #HBCU #football #california #californiafootball #mpc #hartnell #uscfootball #calfootbal i do not own the rights to the music. music is for background music entertainment purposes only.
