My equipment is enclosed Outside the house and only the display tank is inside. Outside I laid a cement slab and built two boxes next to the wall. The main display tank water outflow comes out thru the outer house wall in 2 2" PVC pipes with gravity flow into the sump. The first two sump chambers capture any large sediment. The Aqua-C EV240 Protein skimmer is in the second chamber running @ 1800 Gal/hr thru the skimmer. Skimmer does a nice job! Next in the flow is a refugium with liverock, sandbed, several hermits, 1 arrow crab, amphipods, and 4 peppermint shrimp. Next is the water return path is a narrow racetrack set up to grow frags. Water return is pulled by a Reeflo Barracuda Pump at 4500 Gal/Hr. Some of that return is redirected right back to the sump and allows me to adjust water flow to the main tank with out shutting down the Barracuda output. About 2500 Gal/hr makes back to the main tank. With the Barracuda and the Vortec, I get about 4000 Gal/hr water movement for a 225 gallon display tank, or ~20X turnover. The water is produced by a RO/DI into a 25 gallon barrel, with a pump in the barrel. When I'm ready to make saltwater, I just pump 15 gallons into the salt production barrel. I add the proper salt. There is a pump inside the barrel that I turn on to mix the water. I also have a heater in there to keep the water at the tank temperature. When I'm ready to change water, there is a chamber in the sump that holds 15 gallons. I turn off the main barracuda, I pump the chamber dry, I pump in the saltwater, and then turn the barracuda back on. Water is changed with little impact to the display tank About that arrow crab, they are best thing in the world to remove bristle worms. Every time I see him, he's holding a bristle and eating it like a popsicle.!!! I had an abundance of Bristle's... no longer...
