We drove all the way from Nakhon Phanom to Bueng Kan to visit Wat phu tok, a place i've always wanted to visit! We drove from Bueng khong long to wat phu tok which took 40 minutes and at 6:30AM was absolutely freezing. I only had shorts and a T shirt in my bag and felt like a right idiot! On arrival we were given free coffee and fried bread with condensed milk because it was new year. After enjoying these we headed to the start of the trail at the bottom of the mountain. After only heading up for about 10 minutes the views were crazy beautiful, we knew this was going to be super special. Essentially wat phu tok is a temple built into a huge monolith here in the bueng kan province of Isan, the monks here built 7 levels of walkways that run around the mountain 360 degrees, the 7 levels stand for the 7 steps to buddhist enlightenment. As we got to level 5 things got scary! the walkways are super creaky and literally bolted into the side of the cliff, at the same time though the views over the Isan countryside are just stunning so you forget about what your standing on. We then walked around level 6 which was the most thrilling of them all, this is surely thailand's most dangerous temple this level will really test your fears! Above this was level 7 which we checked out but there is not much going on other than thick jungle and venomous snakes! At the bottom the freebies were still flowing! There was free water, free lunch and also free thai coffee and tea! This was so nice and everybody was in an amazing mood, the people here were some of the friendliest we have met in thailand. For me wat phu tok is the ultimate hidden gem of Isan northeast Thailand we absolutely loved it and was well worth driving all the way from nakhon phanom just to visit!
