This is a short background video to a recent recording I made of this famous tune - something about the tune (when and why it was written), how it became famous and how it works - key and time signatures and structure. Then there is a bit about preparing to play it and some of the issues the player has to think about. As in my recording of the tune, the violin used is by James Findlay of the small village of Padanarum in Forfarshire, Scotland. It was made in 1880. James Findlay was in fact a handloom weaver who took up violin making very successfully. He made over 500 violins and trained other makers.
