Carol of the Bells was originally a Ukrainian folk song called "Schedryk/Щедрик" meaning bountiful evening. It was composed by Ukrainian composer Mykloa Leontovych. It was originally sung to bring in the new year and tells of a sparrow who sings of the prosperity in the coming spring. In an attempt to convince the western world of Ukraine's independence from Russia, a Ukrainian choir was dispatched to showcase Ukraine's rich cultural heritage which featured the song "Schedryk." However Ukraine's aspirations for independent statehood were constantly frustrated by opposing forces and in 1921 the original composer Mykloa Leontovych was murdered by a Russian agent. With Ukraine not being recognized as a political state, the choir was unable to be funded by the government and they left Europe and went to America. While in America the choir was heard by Petr Wilhousky an American composer with a Ukrainian heritage. In 1936 he adapted Schedryk into the famous "Carol of the Bells" for his school choir. This version takes inspiration from the original piece "Schedryk" and from the famous adaption "Carol of the Bells" with a few of my own personally composed sections.
