Mrs. Jayshree Bua, aged 73 years suffered from impaired hearing in both her ears for more than 20 years. She was then diagnosed to have Otosclerosis. Otosclerosis is abnormal bony deposition around the Stapes middle ear bone which is connected to the cochlea. This diminishes transmission of sound from the eardrum to the cochlea. She was using hearing aids for the same for around 15 years. But over the years her hearing loss had worsened and the hearing aids weren’t helping her. Once she went for a vacation where she faced a severe hearing handicap. The batteries of her hearing aid got discharged and she neither had spare ones nor were they available in shops. She had a torrid time on the trip and couldn’t enjoy the trip at all. That is when she decided to get rid of the hearing aids and undergo Stapedotomy surgery. Post-surgery her hearing has showed remarkable improvement. Not only has she stopped using hearing aids in the operated ear but also in the other ear she doesn’t feel the need. She now keeps the telephone and television at a lower volume. Her confidence levels have increased and she can independently carry out her day-today activities.
