Reforestation Projects Update by One Tree Planted, February 2022. Episode 15. ✅ Subscribe to One Tree Planted: https://bit.ly/2IsCtqc 🌳 Plant one tree: https://onetreeplanted.org/reforestat... This month, we're looking at these tree planting projects: 00:00 Intro 00:30 Romania 01:10 Oregon 1:48 Costa Rica 2:54 Pacific NW -Protect the Orca 3:45 Conclusion For this month's first reforestation update we are starting to plant more than 250,000 trees in Romania in an effort to restore degraded lands of the Carpathian basin. This area is currently populated by monocultures of shallow root spruce which are not resilient in the face of extreme weather conditions and monocultures do not promote an optimal level of biodiversity. By replanting in these degraded areas, local communities will benefit from the reforestation of the sites by the forest's erosion, irrigation control and other ecosystem services. Next up we are planting 21,000 trees in Port Orford, Oregon. The Port Orford cedar is a culturally significant tree to native American cultures in the southern Oregon, northern California region who used it for building sweat lodges and ceremonial structures. The disease resistant Port Orford cedar stock is important to re-introduce to the landscape to help bolster the native population that has been devastated by a root rot disease. A 190,000 mangrove restoration project with Osa Conservation has just launched in Costa Rica and will restore 40 hectares of critical mangrove habitat. We are working with local associations and a model for community-led restoration in the Térraba Sierpe National Wetland to help ensure wildlife populations and local economies can adapt to a changing climate. Our planting partner, Osa Conservation will work closely with One Tree Planted to document natural regeneration in restoration areas to unlock additional funding opportunities which will allow us to grow this exciting project to new heights. Finally, we explore our tree planting project Protect the Orcas in the Pacific Northwest taking place across 50+ Watersheds throughout California, Oregon, Washington, BC. We will be planting over 700,000 trees to help the orcas. Every year, as the Orca's migrate North to South and back again they rely on the West Coast Chinook salmon for food (nearly 80% of their diet). However, salmon stocks are diminishing due to loss of habitat and increasing pollution. Planting trees along rivers and streams of the Pacific Northwest restores habitat for the endangered orca. The trees planted will help with water quality and therefore improve the health and quantity of salmon for the orca to eat!
