(RAW FOOTAGE: 5/01/1967) This is not a formal speech. This is rare, raw footage of Stokely Carmichael (later Kwame Ture) holding an impromptu press conference with reporters right outside the Atlanta Armed Forces Entrance and Examining Station (the draft office) on May 1, 1967. This was a direct and deliberate confrontation. As the chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), Carmichael used this media scrum to amplify his fiery anti-draft and "Black Power" message on the government's own turf. In this footage, you can see him verbally sparring with the press, linking the Civil Rights struggle at home to the war in Vietnam. He famously questioned why Black men should be drafted to fight for a country that denied them basic freedoms in places like Atlanta and Alabama. This is the raw energy of the "We Ain't Goin'!" movement. Connect & Discuss: What's the most powerful point Carmichael makes to the reporters in this clip?
