Ano-shu-zumi stone walls are a traditional stone masonry technique developed by the “Ano-shu” stonemason group from the Sakamoto area in Otsu City, Shiga Prefecture. This technique involves skillfully stacking unprocessed natural stones, combining natural beauty with robustness. The Ano-shu were active around the Enryaku-ji Temple and Hiyoshi Taisha Shrine, and their techniques were used in many castle walls from the Sengoku period to the early Edo period. Notable examples include the stone walls of Azuchi Castle and Hikone Castle. The technique is symbolized by the saying “Listen to the voice of the stone,” which means carefully selecting and placing stones based on their shape and size to create a very sturdy structure.
