Seals with Rabies

In recent years there has been a marked increase of aggressive, unprovoked, incidents involving seals against humans around Cape Town, South Africa. And scientists investigating these attacks uncovered a surprising, and shocking reason: rabies. This is the first time rabies has been detected in marine mammals. Rabies is a deadly, incurable disease that can affect all mammals including humans. It spreads via the bite of an infected animal and with this seal species forming dense colonies, with thousands of animals, it creates a high chance for animal-to-animal transmission, but, wild seals are also equally at home in the open ocean as they are in harbours, putting them into close proximity to humans which is a cause for concern for the city managers.
