The world has witnessed some legendary Vikings, such as Ragnar Lothbrok, Bjorn Ironside, or Erik the Red. But there was one other Viking who was the most badass of all: Olaf Tryggvason. But who was he and why was he so infamous? Watch this video to know why. Olaf Tryggvason was born around 963 in a period when the Vikings were constantly at war. He is said to have been the great-grandson of Harald Fairhair. Olaf's mother was with him from a young age, and it is believed that his father was killed before their voyage began for the new land. After being sold into slavery by his uncle, Olaf was saved by another. When Olaf arrived in Kiev, he settled down and grew into a faithful warrior. He left to seek adventure, following the footsteps of his ancestors. While travelling he met Geira, who became his bride and later died not long after their wedding. Olaf's anguish was so heart-breaking that he decided to leave Grimstad to challenge the world again. Olaf Tryggvason formed a partnership with Sweyn Forkbeard who was the son of Harald Bluetooth to wage war. Although many of his attempts were unsuccessful, Olaf remained a threat to many people across England, and tried his hand at persuading people to leave their old ways and embrace Christianity. The year 997 saw Olaf relocating to Trondheim, a city he founded, where he built up a small trade town that later became his royal residence. He died in battle around the year 1000 when it is believed he jumped into the sea before surrendering.
