Chemical burns can be very harmful to the eye. In this episode of A State of Sight, Isaac Porter, MD explains the different types of chemical burns and how they can be treated. It is important to flush the eyes for an extended period of time after a chemical exposure. Many work places that contain chemicals have an eye wash station that can be used to run streams of water into both eyes after an accident. It is important to keep the exposed eyes open in the water to dilute and remove the chemicals. After this, treatment in an emergency room or urgent care center may be necessary for significant burns. There, doctors will be able to assess the extent of the damage and can continue flushing the eyes if needed. There are special contact lenses designed to irrigate fluid into the eye and these may be needed in emergency treatment. A thorough eye exam can show the extent of the burn and initial treatment is usually to decrease inflammation and prevent infection. After healing takes place, surgery may be needed to restore vision or the surface of the eye. http://eyeporter.com / eyeporter twitter @eyeporter
