Lamya's Poem is a powerful animated piece that takes place during the Syrian Civil War where Lamya (voiced by Millie Davis) through the power of his poem meets Rumi (Mena Massoud) as she and her widowed mother escape Aleppo to find refuge in a foreign land. I spoke with Kadi, who was born in Aleppo and now resides here in California about the significance of Rumi's poems and how in the last year he has become the most noticeable writer in the western world nearly a millennia after his passing. We also discuss how this story is not about one particular religion or perspective but that it is an international story, it is one of loss, love, hope, family and survival. Official Synopsis: In a mysterious and haunting dream world, a 12-year-old girl meets the 13th century young poet Rumi, as they travel through a fantastical land where luxurious airships float through the air, and unfurling, insidious black tendrils spread over a mystical city. Directed by Alex Kronemer, Lamya’s Poem is a heartfelt animated tale that follows a Syrian girl as she flees her war-torn country on a perilous journey that eventually brings her to the unwelcoming shores of a European refugee camp. The lives of Lamya, escaping the Syrian Civil War in 2016, and young Rumi, running away from Mongol hordes in 1221, curiously parallel each other; in the timeless space where the two meet, each ends up saving the other from despair and hopelessness. This moving film conveys the sudden violence of war, the disorientation of displacement, and the risks many take to just survive—all through the lens of an imaginative, bright young girl.
