Why Australia Needs Real Environmental Protection Now | House of Representatives | 4 November 2025

For more than two decades, Australia’s environmental laws have been stuck in a cycle of delay, division and political point-scoring. People in Bennelong and across the country are tired of the same old fight. They want progress, clarity and real protection for the natural world we all depend on. In Parliament, I spoke in support of the Environment Protection Reform Bill 2025, the most significant environmental reform in a generation. These changes will finally give us a modern, science-based framework that protects what’s left of our environment and helps restore what we’ve already lost. This bill creates an independent Environmental Protection Australia, delivers clear national environmental standards, strengthens penalties for wrongdoing and puts First Nations knowledge at the centre of decision-making. It also ensures projects can be assessed faster and more fairly, providing certainty for business while lifting environmental outcomes. These reforms didn’t come from the top down. They came from community members, environmental advocates and Labor’s own grassroots movement who pushed for change for nearly a decade. Locals in Bennelong have backed this every step of the way. Australians have voted for progress on climate and the environment at two elections. Now it’s time for Parliament to deliver. The environment can’t wait another five, ten or twenty-five years for action. This is our moment to get it done. Let’s rise to the challenge and build a system that works for nature, for communities and for future generations.
