Hasan Azhary's PAUD Al Hidayah Ceria Tawa Peduli

Azhary was Born in Mataram, Nusatenggara Barat on 23 August 1977. He arrived in Jakarta in 1995 to pursue a study in a university, but he must bury his dream deeply; the money he brought from his village was far from sufficient to support the study and even his daily living. On October 1995 he accepted to study in Pesantren Hidayatullah (a religious school) with a condition that he must agree to teach elementary school kids the Quran recitation. The Pesantren Hidayatullah then instructed Azhary to move to Penjaringan village in North Jakarta to do the same task, teaching Quran recitation for kids in this slum area. Penjaringan village was an area inhabited by mainly fishermen, laborers, factory workers, motorcycletaxi drivers, mostly uneducated with little time for their children who learnt to earn their own money singing or begging on the streets and even stealing in the fish market. On April 27, 2009 Azhary and the community in the area successfully opened a pre-school facility called PAUD Al Hidayah Ceria Tawa Peduli. Azhary also manages the TPA Al Hidayah, a religious school. No curriculum and all tutors are volunteers. There are 25 children studying in this school. Azhary recalled his early days when he was sent there by Pesantren Al Hidayah, an Islamic educational organization in 1994 with little more than his clothes and one meal a day, living in the small musholla (prayer room). But now all changed with donations from Yayasan Arsari Djojohadikusumo (YAD) and Wadah Foundations. It took 3 years to get the children and parents interested in school. He disclosed that now the TPA has 324 children of all ages who regularly attend his classes on different days and hours, depending upon their school schedules. Azhary assisted by 14 tutors, all volunteers. Besides the children men meet once a week for Quran recitation which also helps community relations. It is not just education that has made Azhary a leader in the area but as a consultant for family problems. Azhary can now eat 3 meals a day and is married to one of his "first generation class" and has two children. He is studying psychology at Al Azhar University Indonesia with funding from Yayasan Arsari and Wadah so that he may be more knowledgeable to uphold the responsibility of caring for 2000 families in the area. The 15 years living in this slum area has not affected the spirit of this man dedicated to the betterment of mankind.
