At the 2017 Mystic Seaport Wooden Boat Show, this demonstration is showing how to split a log. This would have been the first step in building a ship in the days before saws were available. Viking ships started this way. Before I started filming, each end of the log were scored using an ax. This made a place to start the wedges. Larger and larger wedge are driven in and after a lot of effort the log becomes two. Then later a board is cut from of one of the halves and with axes and is cut into shape and thickness, all by hand and back bone. The smoke seen in the beginning is from a fire that will be used to steam the board so it can be bent into its final shape. There is a pot of water boiling on the fire and hot water will be added to one side of the board. The wet side will be placed near the heat of the coals and when soft enough, the board can be shaped. I am only showing the splitting of the log. to see more, go here. http://forum.woodenboat.com/showthrea...
