Practice Race 1 with comments: It's February 17th and this is the first practice race of the day. Start Review; Rule of thumb, make your last tack 30-45 seconds before the start. The first boat, the one farthest from the committee boat was too early and had to tack onto port to cross the start line. In a large fleet, tacking to port may not be possible. You would be forced to jibe and come back to the line. The next boat was a few seconds early and had to run down the start line. Good acceleration but, if there were boats to leeward, you would be forced up and over early. The next two boats were late, but the boat closest to the committee boat has the opportunity to point high and catch the led boat that crossed the line. You have to always be testing the highest angle of the groove lane while not sacrificing boat speed. Here you can see the main is outboard and the boat is footing. It's good for speed, but too low an angle to the windward mark. Let's see this start again. Mark Rounding Review; The second boat approaching the leeward mark does a nice job of gaining an inside overlap and acquiring rights for mark room. Always sail wide then tight to the mark as you pass it. Good sheet management means neither sail luffs as you round up. As for the trailing boat, once you've passed the mark, you have the choice to grind to windward at a high angle or tack away. Trailing boats rarely catch up because of the wind shadow and the swirling turbulence coming of the leech of the main. Rule of thumb is you have to be at least 5 boat lengths away to not be affected. Better to tack away, determine if your new course is a lift or a header, by using your land based references. Groove Lane Review; As this boat passes the committee boat upwind you'll notice the angle is footing because the boom is outboard, but also feathering because you can see the main is luffing. Trim in the main until the boom is level with the horizon. Again, sail the high angle in the groove lane, but with sails full. Better angle to the mark with good boat speed. See you on the water!
