PAESTUM | Ancient Greek City in ITALY | Travel Vlog

The visit to the Greek temples of Paestum is a perfect complement to the Amalfi Coast. Less than an hour by train from Salerno, the archaeological site of this ancient Greco-Roman city houses some of the best preserved Greek temples in the world. Founded as a Greek colony with the name of Poseidonia in the 7th century BC, the Romans changed their name to Paestum after conquering it several centuries later. The fantastic state of conservation of the buildings is due to the abandonment of the city at the beginning of the Middle Ages, possibly due to the flooding of the surroundings and the presence of mosquitoes carrying malaria. This made Paestum remain in oblivion until the 18th century, when it was "rediscovered" by travelers and explorers of that time. Of its three main Doric temples, the formerly named Temple of Neptune (whose cult is now attributed to Hera, but also to Zeus and even Apollo), is the most spectacular of them all.
