On a grim morning in 1958, Eastbourne station became the scene of one of Sussex’s most shocking post-war railway accidents. A steam express from Glasgow, arriving three minutes early, crashed into the rear of an electric train bound for London Bridge. The electric service was already seven minutes late departing — and both trains were scheduled to use the same platform. Five people lost their lives, including the driver of the electric train. Around 30 passengers were injured. Questions quickly centred on one crucial issue: Why did two signals fail to stop the express? In this episode of Matthew Explores, we examine: The sequence of events leading to the crash How steam and electric services operated side-by-side in the 1950s The human cost of the disaster What the investigation revealed How railway safety evolved in the years that followed This is the story of the 1958 Eastbourne rail crash — a tragedy that could have been far worse.
