The heart is supported by a group of ligaments and adhesions called the pericardial ligaments: Pericardiophrenic ligaments These strong adhesions attach the floor of the fibrous pericardium to the diaphragm's central tendon. Sternopericardial ligaments These weak adhesions connect the anterior fibrous pericardium to the upper and lower sternum. The superior sternopericardial ligament attaches to the manubrium, and the inferior sternopericardiac ligament attaches to the xiphoid process. Fibrous pericardium This strong, inelastic layer of the pericardium attaches to the large vessels at the base of the heart. It also blends with the tunica adventitia of the ascending aorta, pulmonary trunk, and superior vena cava. Serous layer This closed sac, also known as the pericardial sac, is surrounded by the fibrous pericardium. It contains a small amount of clear fluid and is made up of two parts: the parietal layer, which lines the fibrous layer, and the visceral layer, which covers the heart and great vessels. The pericardium is a connective tissue layer that separates the heart and great vessels from the rest of the middle mediastinum. The position of the heart and pericardium in the mediastinum is influenced by movements of the chest wall and diaphragm.
