Maryland county leaders back ICE operations after Homeland Security buys warehouse

While Maryland lawmakers move to limit cooperation with federal immigration authorities, Washington County leaders are taking the opposite approach. The Washington Board of County Commissioners in Maryland approved a resolution Tuesday morning declaring full support for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the Department of Homeland Security, and local law enforcement. The measure also encourages local agencies to cooperate with federal immigration operations. The purchase has drawn increased scrutiny in recent days, including a letter from Maryland Gov. Wes Moore, who has demanded answers from DHS about whether the facility could be used as an immigration detention center. He also pledged to sign legislation moving quickly through the General Assembly that would prohibit local law enforcement partnerships with ICE.
