Derek Walcott (1930–2017) was a renowned Caribbean poet, playwright, and critic, born in Saint Lucia. He is best known for his exploration of colonialism, identity, race, history, and cultural conflict. Walcott belonged to a mixed racial heritage, which deeply influenced his writings and created a constant tension between African roots and European culture. He wrote primarily in English, but his works reflect the rhythms, myths, and landscapes of the Caribbean. One of the major themes in his poetry is the psychological impact of colonialism, especially the violence and moral confusion caused by imperial rule. His famous poem “A Far Cry from Africa” expresses his inner conflict during the Mau Mau uprising in Kenya, where he feels torn between his African ancestry and his English language and education. Derek Walcott was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1992 for his outstanding contribution to world literature. His epic poem Omeros is considered his masterpiece. Walcott remains an important post-colonial writer whose works are widely studied in English literature syllabi. ⭐ Key Facts (Quick Revision) Born: 1930, Saint Lucia Died: 2017 Genre: Poetry, Drama Themes: Colonialism, identity, race, violence, history Famous Works: A Far Cry from Africa, Omeros Award: Nobel Prize in Literature (1992) Are you preparing for LT Grade (Mains) and looking for a perfect 200 words answer from English literature?
