As Cape divers, we get to dive almost every dive through kelp forests. There is nothing quite as exhilarating as sinking beneath the surface and swimming between thick, swaying stipes of enormous algae. Sometimes the kelp grows so densely it creates canopies that only thin shafts of light can penetrate. Cape kelp forests have to be tough enough to withstand large swells, even in False Bay. Millions of animals thrive in this golden brown forest making up one of the most diverse ecosystems on the planet. The scenes in this clip have been collected over more than 400 dives. Each one a precious memory... The seal that appeared out of nowhere in gin-clear waters at Justins Caves. With less than 50 bar in my cylinder, I stopped just long enough to capture its curious stare. The last time I dived with the cow sharks before they disappeared from Pyramid Rock. It was dusk and the water just 10C. Conditions couldn't have been better and the sharks were plenty and sharky. Freediving with enormous stingrays, cormorants, fish, and even mating puffadder shysharks. Diving kelp forests in the Cape just never gets old!
