John Hiseman was definitely at the helm of Colosseum. His dynamic percussion is obvious throughout the band's albums in which he was a part. He helped found the band in South East London, England, amid contemporaries and associates such as The Graham Bond Organisation (in which Hiseman played with John McLaughlin and alternated with Ginger Baker), John Mayall's Bluesbreakers and Cream. Accompanying Hiseman were Dick Heckstall-Smith on tenor sax; Dave Greenslade, organ; Tony Reeves, bass; and Dave "Clem" Clempson - also known as the guitarist who replaced Peter Frampton after the latter left Humble Pie for a solo career. It's easy to hear a similarity between Colosseum and groups such as Cream (whose "Rope Ladder to the Moon" was a Jack Bruce composition), and other groups, even those as diverse as Captain Beefheart's (Don De Vliet's) Magic Band. They are part British psychedelia, part jazz and part quirky, avantegarde progressive rock. After many personnel changes throughout the 1980s and 1990s, the band continued to reunite and tour. (Among other groups, Hiseman formed Colosseum II after leaving the group, with musicians such as Don Airey, Neil Murray and Gary Moore surrounding him, and incorporating a more progressive rock sound upon its release in 1976.) After Hiseman's passing in 2018, the band recorded one more studio album, Restoration, in 2022. Here's my version of a few songs I remember from its third studio album, The Grass is Always Greener (often confused with its second: The Valentyne Suite). I recall discovering it on an 8-track tape (Okay, I'm old!) I bought from Woolco when I was a boy. (I prefer Clempson's vocals to those of Farlowe - but what do I know?) I hope you enjoy Colosseum's music enough to want to hear other songs in its rich catalog. Finished on Valentine's Day, 2026 in a "love shack" somewhere in Orange County, California.
