I’ve been working on a documentary on Chee Soon Juan and his family for almost a decade. It’s a continuation of “Behind the Man”, a video I released in 2015. The following year, I sought his children’s permission at a cafe in Toa Payoh if I could continue to film them over an extended period of time, hoping to capture their growing up years. My pitch then was giving them a hard drive filled with wonderful memories. At that time, I had this vague idea of doing a non-fictional version of ‘Boyhood’ - a Richard Linklater film that was shot over 12 years where actors naturally aged over the years. Maybe it’s the coffee and ice cream, I was relieved when they decided to give me the go-ahead. So for the next few years, I tried covering events in their lives, though not successful on some occasions. I also got to know other members of Chee’s extended family, and was able to meet and filmed Chee’s mother before she passed on in 2020. All I can say is that I witnessed immense affection in the family. All of them would gather every weekend to have dinner together and undoubtedly close-knitted. Chee’s mom told me that her son was well-behaved albeit restless in school. She didn’t speak much due to her advanced age and the last time when I met her, she couldn’t recognise me anymore. I heard that back in those days, she developed this phobia of going home to see stacks of defamation documents being left at her door. For the last 3 years, filming has slowed down considerably due to Covid, work and being busy with my children. During this period, I’m also diagnosed with stage 4 Cancer and still undergoing treatment. At this point, I’d like to seek public funding to help me in completing this project and also to run Bang! Bang!, a YouTube platform (please like and subscribe!) created to produce alternative content, where over 90% is self-funded. To continue producing more works and to finish the documentary, I’m seeking public support of S$300,000. Any contribution is good for me. Transfer can be made via a QR code at the end of the video, or the following: https://www.paypal.com/ncp/payment/H9... PayNow (UEN): 202238615R Separately, I also welcome any opportunity to produce and direct commercial works. Please email me at [email protected]. The video I’m releasing is by no means a trailer. I extracted footage which may of public interest leading up to the election. How the documentary will turn out would be at the editing room with footage collected over the years. Film title: Ji Pa Ban (A Million) Log line An idealist who has forsaken a promising career path to fight for democracy in Singapore, but still not garnering a seat in Parliament after more than 30 years. Eventually, at what cost does he and family members have to bear? Director's Statement I had my fear of covering Chee Soon Juan. Anyone closely associated with him will likely be watched by the State. It is not unexpected to pay a price. But what is surprising is that filming Chee and family has made me question myself and the person I want to become. I also come to understand what I want and my role as a filmmaker. Unknowingly in the process, I’m also beginning to like myself than before.
