In this lesson I will show you my 5 favorite licks from the studio recording of The Allman Brothers classic “Blue Sky,” featuring the twin guitar attack of Duane Allman and Dickey Betts. Appearing on the 1972 album Eat a Peach, this track is one of Allman’s last recorded performances. You can reference the original recording here:    • The Allman Brothers Band   -   Blue Sky (E...   We’ll look at two phrases from Duane’s solo, followed by both harmony parts, and then two phrases from Bett’s solo. This song provides a great study in using the major scale for improvisation, in particular the major pentatonic scale with the added 4th, which in this case is E major pentatonic with an added A note. After you learn each phrase, transpose it up and down the fretboard and vary the rhythms. This will help you incorporate each lick into your own playing style. Have fun!
