Saint Eucherius of Orléans (20 February): Butler's Lives of the Saints

St. Eucherius of Orléans (†743) was a monk, bishop, confessor, and fearless defender of the Church who suffered exile for standing against corruption. From childhood, his mother consecrated him entirely to God, begging only for divine grace. As a young man, he meditated deeply on St. Paul’s warning that the pleasures and riches of this world are empty shadows. Moved by these truths, he abandoned worldly ambition and entered the monastery around 714. After years of penitence and obedience, he was chosen Bishop of Orléans in 721 — despite his reluctance. As shepherd, he labored tirelessly to instruct and reform his flock with both zeal and charity. But when Charles Martel began seizing Church property to finance wars, St. Eucherius boldly rebuked the injustice. For speaking truth to power, he was exiled in 737. Even in banishment, his holiness won admiration. He spent his final years in prayer and contemplation until his holy death on February 20, 743. His life reminds us: • The world’s glory is fleeting • A bishop must defend the Church • True courage means risking everything for truth • Holiness often leads through suffering St. Eucherius teaches Catholic men especially that fidelity to Christ may cost reputation, comfort, and security — but eternal reward outweighs earthly loss. 📖 Source: The Lives of the Saints by Fr.
