“The First Time I Ever Saw Your Face“ is my song of choice for this week's Outlander video. I chose the beautiful version by Josh Groban 🙏🏼    / @joshgroban   The song title suits Jamie perfectly, for him it was love at first sight. He fell for Claire almost instantly. He told her himself, when he woke up after falling off his horse and she was nagging and scolding him, he knew she was the one for him. And when he held and comforted her in Leoch, he knew he loved her. The first verse fits so well with this, their first meeting, what she triggered in him. "I thought the sun rose in your eyes and the moon and stars were the gifts you gave to the dark and endless skies." Yes, she brought light into his life. A life overshadowed by Black Jack Randall, the flogging, the death of his father, the flight to France. He lived in a dark place of guilt and loneliness, cut off from his sister, always on the run, unable to assume his role as Laird. And when this strange woman appeared, it was as if she chased away the darkness with the gifts she brought. Her care, her compassion, her beauty, her desire to heal and help, her sense of justice, her strength and self-confidence, her courage... all little gifts that suddenly made the dark sky look very different. And the second verse, it's as if it tells the story of their first kiss. The one in the church, but also the second, at the beginning of the wedding night. I think kissing her felt completely different to any kiss he had ever experienced before. "I felt the earth move in my hand, like the trembling heart of a captive bird, that was there at my command." He held her life, her safety in his hands, unaware that the same was true for her, what role she would actually play in his life. They were both this bird whose heart was trembling with excitement, fear, insecurity, uncertainty, paralyzed by the energy that flowed between them. And when they lay together for the first time (or rather the first 3 times), from awkward and somewhat embarrassing, to passionately impetuous, to close and fused, it became clear where the path would lead them, that their hearts had already found each other. The third verse seems to describe exactly that. It was one of the songs that I heard again after a long time and immediately saw how I would design the video. Even the idea of using scenes from Carnal Knowledge as a framework and guideline for the video was there straight away. I found it charming and also kind of romantic to let Jamie's mind wander from this difficult situation, perhaps one of the hardest tests of their love, to their beginnings, to the moment he fell in love. To the moments when he discovered how special and unique their connection was, what a fire burned between them, and to remind him that it still does, unchanged.
