Various disadvantages are: 1.Thermal-power plants are not environment friendly and plants emit toxic pollutants like ash, carbon dioxide and sulphur dioxide. 2. This type of power station ultimately responsible for raise in sea water level. 3. Ability of thermal plants is dependent on the quality of coal. Seldom does it produce the optimum level. 4. The machines and boilers in thermal plants are intricate and complicated. So, occurrence of mechanical trouble is more frequent, maintenance and recurring cost is high. 5. Thermal power station has less initial cost as compared to hydro-electric generating station. 6. May be profitable in the short-run. Seldom viable in the long-run. 7. Has shorter lifespan. 8. It is very difficult to maintain optimum supply for a long period. 9. Skilled persons are required for erecting and maintaining the power station. 10. Land requirement is more for storage of coal and ash. 11. Low overall efficiency. 12. Thermal engines requires huge amount of lubricating oil that is very expensive.  13. Nuclear thermal power plant demands excessive amount of water for cooling purpose. 14. Coal type thermal power plant requires comparatively larger duration before it supply generated power to the grid. 15. The heated water that comes from thermal power plant has an adverse effect on the lives in the water and disturbs the ecology. 16. The fuel is Non-Renewable Resource 17. Efficiency of the plant decreases with time. 18. It cannot be used as peak load plant, as its part load efficiency decreases very rapidly with decreasing load. 19. Transportation of fuel is one of the major difficulties for the plants located away from coal fields. 20. Life of the plant is hardly 3 to 4 decades compared with hydro-plant (1 to 2 centuries). 21. Gestation period (period for commissioning of plant) takes long time, but less than hydro plant (Structure & Commissioning) 22. Needs large amount of Coal and Water so has to be placed a large water sources and coal mine. Else the logistics cost will be too high. A Power plant of 3000MW typically requires 35,000 to 45,000 tonnes of coal. 23. Nearly 20% to 30% of coal is rejected as Ash, which is a waste and needs to be dumped. Unutilized ash is collected in Ash dykes that form the largest land usage in a typical thermal power plant. It is also detrimental to environment. 24. Some liquid effluents are also discharged as the byproduct of water / chemical treatment and runoff of various oil / chemicals. 25. Thermal power plant take a lot of time to start up ( generally 4–8 hrs) and don’t do well in cycling that is large up and down in power generation and mostly designed for constant load. Therefore any fluctuation is power demand can be detrimental to it life cycle. 26. Starting time is quite longer than other power plants.
