Sam Sfirri’s “Trio” (2011), performed by Matt Carlson (piano), Collin Oldham (cello), and Catherine Lee (oboe d’amore) at the Extradition Summer Concert 2025, held at Leaven Community in Portland, Oregon, USA, on Saturday, June 14, 2025. This extremely reductive score from Wandelweiser composer Sam Sfirri presents three performers with twelve pages, each comprising just three musical symbols, one for each player. For example, one page depicts only a quarter note, a half note, and a whole note. Another contains a half-note rest, a staccato mark, and a breath mark. A third contains indications to release the piano pedal, play with a down bow, and play loudly and forcefully. By grounding the totality of their playing in these symbols, the performers give their realization of each score page a distinct character. For this performance, the players chose six of the twelve available pages. Based in Portland, Oregon, Extradition is an ensemble and concert series that works at the intersection of composition and improvisation, deliberation and chance, clarity and silence.
