A performance of "Zi You Hua"《自由花》(Flower of Freedom), which originated as a vocal piece from Nanyang da diao quzi (南阳大调曲子), a form of traditional accompanied narrative singing (shuochang, 说唱) from Nanyang (南阳市), southwestern Henan province, central China, before being adapted as an instrumental piece. The guzheng (古筝, literally "ancient zheng," a Chinese bridge zither) performer is Mr. Cao Zheng (曹正, 1920-1998), an eminent exponent of the Henan school of zheng playing (Chinese: Henan zheng pai, 河南筝派 or Zhongzhou zheng pai, 中州筝派). Cao here performs together with a pipa (琵琶, Chinese pear-shaped lute) player named Yang Xiuming (杨秀明, 1933 or 1935-2015), who was best known as a National-Level Representative Transmitter of the Intangible Cultural Heritage Item of Teochew music. Cao was a student of the zheng masters Lou Shuhua (娄树华, 1907-1952) and Liang Tsai-Ping (梁在平; b. Gaoyang County 高阳县, Hebei, China, February 23, 1910 or 1911; d. Taipei, Taiwan, June 28, 2000), and Cao's version of "Shang Lou" closely matches Liang's. Both Lou and Liang were themselves students of the Henan zheng master Wei Ziyou (魏子猷, 1875-1936). Henan bantou qu is a genre of traditional music from Nanyang (南阳市), southwestern Henan province (河南省), central China, which is generally played by traditional Chinese string instruments, either solo or in ensemble. Bantou qu music, which is based on the traditional qupai (曲牌, labeled tune) known as "Ba Ban"《八板》, is typically used as introduction or interlude music in narrative singing from Henan province such as Nanyang da diao quzi (南阳大调曲子). Nanyang borders Xinyang to the southeast, Zhumadian to the east, Pingdingshan to the northeast, Luoyang to the north, Sanmenxia to the northwest, the province of Shaanxi (陕西) to the west, and the province of Hubei to the south.
