Rick Stevens, age 72, in his first recording session since his release from prison and recording Tower of Power's Bump City in 1972. Listen and watch Stevens lay down vocal tracks in a re-recording of the Edwin Starr classic 'War' at The Track Shack Studios in Sacramento, Calif. to be released in 2013 on a upcoming CD titled Chuck 'Bari' Music: The Essentials Pt. 1. Sentenced to death for the 1976 triple slaying in a drug deal gone wrong, Stevens was paroled from California's state prison in July 2012 and limited to living within a 50-mile radius in a city just north of Sacramento. With members of Tower of Power encamped at The Track Shack Studios, recording tracks for their upcoming studio album, Rick Stevens called long-time acquaintance, Emilio Castillo, and arranged to meet with Emilio, Rocco, and other members of the band, at The Shack after 36 years behind bars. Rick had rocketed to stardom with Tower of Power's 1972 Bump City album, giving the band its first national exposure and leading to a Super Bowl half-time appearance. The album included the hit single "You're Still a Young Man" which peaked at #29 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was Stevens' pinnacle vocal performance before leaving the band. Reaching out to computer software entrepreuneur and owner of The Track Shack while still in prison, Hansen had already begun recording tunes for his upcoming CD. After Castillo introduced him to Stevens at the studio, he later called Castillo and asked him 'whether he thought Stevens still had chops to record?' "You bet," answered Castillo. "He's been singing since he was 8 years old and never lost it." Deciding to replace another vocalist, Hansen and co-producer Jeff Tamelier, invited Stevens to meet and a recording session quickly came together. And the story continues... ..just last week, Stevens re-joined Tower of Power at Yoshi's in Emeryville, Calif -- for one-night only -- singing "You're Still a Young Man."
