A trip up to Mammoth Spring and the headwaters of the Spring River in Northeast / North Central Arkansas. The spring is the second largest natural spring in Arkansas, and stays a consistent 58-60 degrees Fahrenheit all summer long, making it ideal for trout along the first few miles below the dam. There are two notable hatcheries, several public access points, and solid trout, smallmouth and panfish eager for fly, bait or artificial lure. The spring pushes an average of 11 million gallons of cold freshwater PER HOUR through a now defunct dam at the headwaters. During it's prime, the dam powered upper Arkansas and small areas in Missouri as well. It was decommissioned in 1972. The State and the AGFC (Arkansas Game and Fish Commission) now manage the area, and most access points are stocked weekly from the hatcheries at Access 1 and 3. Please remember to practice conservation efforts. Take what you can eat, fish legally, and don't poach more than the daily limit allows. When you can, catch and release always gets a nod from the locals. Even though Spring River’s trout water area is short, it has a lot of persity. The three-mile stretch from Mammoth Spring to Dam 3 (an old hydropower structure) is ideal for wading or fishing from the bank, except for the deep section near the dam, which provides good boat fishing. Bank fishing is limited below Dam 3, both by streamside topography and the fact that both banks of the river are privately owned. There’s a small wade-fishing/bank-fishing area alongside the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission’s Spring River Hatchery, but aside from this area, the best way to fish the river downstream from the dam is from a canoe. Rentals are available near the hatchery, or you can launch your own at the public ramp. The first three miles below Dam 3 provide the best action and the biggest fish. One-pound to three-pound rainbows are fairly common, although most fish are recently released stockers. Brown trout provide a trophy-trout facet to the river’s fishing profile. Although you’ll find fish in deep-water runs, the best fishing is usually just below riffles and falls. When it comes to Spring River fishing, brown trout and rainbow trout aren't the only catches around. The Spring River offers high-quality smallmouth bass fishing and seasonal walleye fishing. These two species are scattered in the river from Myatt Creek to well below Hardy. Spring River anglers will also find good action for jumbo channel and flathead catfish, tailwalking spotted bass, and small but sassy rock bass, warmouths and longear sunfish. The Spring is hard to beat for stream walleye fishing. Some sampling surveys in recent years revealed more walleye than trout in the Spring River. Between Mammoth Spring and Hardy, try jigs in the foamy water below shoals and waterfalls. Farther downstream from Myatt Creek to the river’s mouth, walleye are scarcer but bigger, with several 12- to 15-pound fish caught in recent years. Boulders and riffle areas are the best spots for catching stream walleye. This place has drawn me in. I will return to these gin clear waters again and again...
