An unusual healer: Using maggots to clean open wounds

Some call him Carl. Others refer to him as the Maggot Man. Meet Carl Baptista, the founder and chief technology officer of Cuprina Technologies, a Singapore-based biotech company that specializes in using Lucilia cuprina blowflies 🪰 for medical wound care and agriculture. Since 2019, Carl has been using his expertise in biotechnology, microbiology, and entomology to provide solutions inspired by nature’s existing mechanisms. One of these is maggot debridement therapy, whereby live maggots are used to treat open and non-healing wounds common among patients with diabetes. 👉 Compared to surgical debridement, maggots remove dead flesh around chronic wounds 18 times faster, speeding up the healing process and providing a good alternative to patients allergic to anesthetics. When placed inside an open wound, maggots secrete proteins and enzymes that break down dead tissues, disinfecting the wound and promoting healthy tissue growth. Curious to see more?
