SPOKANE, Wash. -- A group of students at Whitworth University are calling for changes to the college's hiring practices by including protections for the LGBTQ+ community. According to the student-led organization Signal Safe Space, Whitworth's current faculty handbook does not consider the LGBTQ+ community a protected class. The group wants this policy to be changed, and they have received over 1,600 signatures of students, staff, and faculty in support so far. "A lot of students come to Whitworth because they believe there's going to be diversity of opinions," said Whitworth student Cienna Dumaoal, "And this isn't a homogenous place, so it's important that we are not silencing a particular part of our community." "I found really wonderful faculty, staff, and friends to support me," said Whitworth student Annaclare Splettstoeszer. "I have also heard from many queer students the exact opposite of that." However, a different opinion and petition were launched in March calling on the Board of Trustees to make no changes to the current policy. That petition has received over 300 signatures so far. In a statement from Whitworth, a select advisory committee is examining the language in their hiring policies and will make recommendations, but there is no timeline in place. "The Whitworth Board of Trustees appointed an advisory committee to examine the university’s hiring language as it pertains to sexual orientation. The committee’s charge is to make recommendations to the board for their consideration. The board, after thorough prayer and discussion, will determine if they will make changes to the original policy through a vote of the board.” ►Subscribe: / 4newsnow ►Website: http://www.kxly.com ►Twitter: / kxly4news ►Facebook: / kxly4news
