In 1963, the Cosmograph Daytona made its official debut, complete with the Speedway’s name emblazoned on the dial. The Daytona Speedway and Rolex’s partnership endures, even decades later. In fact, the 24 Hours of Daytona, aka Rolex 24 at Daytona, is still held annually, with Rolex as their sponsor. Rolex’s beloved chronograph is perfectly at-home among the fast-paced world of motorsport. The current lineup boasts a singularly reliable self-winding movement that is both shock-resistant and anti-magnetic. Housed within a waterproof case virtually impervious to moisture and extreme temperature variations, the movement will keep perfect time while zipping around the racetrack. The Daytona also famously features a chronograph function within the movement that essentially acts as a stopwatch. Whether you’re watching from the stands or you’re behind the wheel, this feature can also be used to calculate average speed or measure elapsed time by engaging the pushers above and below the crown. The collection is always characterized by coordinating registers on the dial, side pushers, and a Tachymeter bezel that coordinates with the chronograph movement to measure average speed and distance. Read on or continue watching the accompanying video to learn more about setting the Daytona and how to use the watch’s chronograph function. When setting your Daytona, it’s important to remember that, while all Daytona watches have the same core features, their operating instructions will vary depending on the year produced. For example, vintage Rolex models rely on a hand-wound movement. Additionally, the chronograph pushers on older models do not screw down. These differences aside, all Daytona watches function much like most mechanical chronographs and follow the same general operating instructions. Before we begin, it’s important to note that there are two different seconds hand on the dial. One operates with the stopwatch function and is centrally mounted. This one will not move unless the chronograph is engaged. The other seconds hand is for continuous seconds and is located in the sub-dial at either 6 or 9 o’clock. HOW TO SET THE ROLEX DAYTONA Step 1: Unscrew the crown and pull it until you feel a faint click. Step 2: Rotate the crown in either direction until the centrally-mounted hands display the correct time on the dial. Step 3: Once the time is set, push in the crown and screw it back into the case completely to protect the movement from moisture and dust. TO USE THE CHRONOGRAPH FUNCTION Step 1: Unscrew the top pusher and press it to start the chronograph function. The centrally-mounted seconds hand will then start to circle the dial. The number of elapsed hours and minutes will be displayed on the sub-dials. Step 2: Press the top pusher again to stop the chronograph. If you press the pusher a third time, it will restart. Step 3: To reset the chronograph to zero, press the lower pusher with the chronograph stopped. All three hands will return to their original values. It’s important to keep the pushers screwed completely into the case when they are not used to maintain the case’s hermetic seal and protect the movement. HOW TO USE THE TACHYMETER BEZEL TO MEASURE AVERAGE SPEED Step 1: Start your Daytona’s chronograph. Once you have traveled one unit of distance, stop the chronograph. The centrally-mounted chronograph seconds hand will point to the value on the bezel that corresponds with your average speed. This process will work regardless of if you are using miles or kilometers. For example, if it takes you 30 seconds to drive 1 mile, the chronograph seconds hand will point to 120 on the bezel. This equates to an average speed of 120 miles per hour. The Daytona can measure speeds of up to 400 units per hour, which is more than enough to keep up with even the world’s fastest racecars.
