Discover the legacy of the USS Des Moines (CA-134), the pioneering lead ship of the Des Moines-class heavy cruisers commissioned in 1948. Renowned for its cutting-edge technology, featuring the revolutionary auto-loading Mark 16 8-inch/55 caliber gun, the Des Moines operated globally until decommissioning in 1961. Despite considerations for reactivation in 1981, limitations in modernizing its weaponry led to its impracticality for the 600-ship Navy initiative. Efforts to preserve Des Moines as a museum ship were thwarted, leading to its scrapping in 2005. However, remnants of this historic vessel, including gun mounts and the bell, found homes in prestigious museums like the USS Lexington Museum in Corpus Christi, Texas. While Des Moines may have been dismantled, artifacts such as her bell, nameplate, and plaque are proudly displayed in various locations, including Camp Dodge in Iowa and Quincy, Massachusetts. Among its commendations are the Navy Occupation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, commemorating its significant service to the United States Navy.
