Turns out cedar is WAY softer than i thought (prob more so when dry)! I had to use the faceplate to turn this piece, everything else just tore right thru. what do you think? let me know in a comment. now, about the microwave: i had seen a couple of turners post about using gentle, repeated heating in the microwave to evenly heat a blank, and reduce or even prevent cracking. thought i’d give it a try because wet wood and Scottsdale are not friends :/ I’ve used this process about three times so far, and i have to say i’m a fan, this cedar piece stopped cracking when i noticed it started, and i had another bowl that didn’t crack at all! i down own a hygrometer, so i can’t report to the starting moisture content of any piece. which could definitely play a role. Anyone else try this method, let me know your thoughts, experience? Wood is aromatic cedar, turned on Grizley lathe. Sanded down to 800 grit and finished inside and out with Odie’s Oil. food safe finish, easy to care for and looks great. ___________________________ Works for sale on my Etsy shop: https://www.etsy.com/shop/ScottsdaleW... ___________________________ Interesting in commissioning a work? please email me at: [email protected] ___________________________ Disclaimer: this video is for entertainment purposes only, and is not meant as instruction on woodturning techniques.
