School Officer Who Arrested Teen Shooter Testifies In Father's Criminal Trial

Brandon King is a deputy sheriff and school resource officer in Barrow County, Georgia, who helped apprehend the teenage gunman who killed four people at Apalachee High School in Winder. King testified in the trial of suspect Colt Gray's father Colin Gray today (Wednesday, February 18). 03:45 "I was in the school all day during the school hours, I personally like to walk around. ... So I did laps around the school, checked classroom doors, make sure they were shut. That's something I was really, really big on. I was on the right side of the hallway. Was on the left side. We were running down the hall." "He did the textbook as we trained in the academy. He got on the prone position, which means he got on his stomach, he put his arms out to the side, like an airplane, and then he turned his head and didn't look, turned his head away from us and wasn't looking./; "Are you telling him to do these specific things?" "After I did that, we held the hallway, and what I mean by that is we were trying to provide as much coverage make sure nobody's coming down, because at that point where we're trained is if there's one shooter there might be two or three." 30:36 "And how long did y'all stay like that?" "Probably a few minutes, sir." "And then what happened? The first wave of reinforcements, as long as as well as a first RTF team, arrived. And then as soon as they got there, I took off and started to check classrooms, checking for any other shooters, and also checking make sure there was nobody else in the building that was injured and needed medical assistance." 32:48 "There are a bunch of bullet holes in the wall. I looked down to my right hand side, close to the door, I observed a human-like object laying on the ground motionless when checked on him and deemed he was deceased, no amount of medical care could save him. I really wasn't paying attention if, when more people got there and how many people, I was very, I was very antsy." 36:01 cross-examination Background: A gunman killed two students and two teachers at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, on September 4, 2024. Eight students and one teacher were injured. The victims were Mason Schermerhorn, 14; Christian Angulo, 14; Richard Aspinwall, 39 and a math teacher and defensive coordinator for the school's football team; and Cristina Irimie, 53 and a math teacher. Colin Gray's oldest son, Colt Gray, is awaiting trial on 55 charges, including counts of murder and aggravated assault. The father is currently on trial for 29 charges, including involuntary manslaughter, second-degree murder, cruelty to children and reckless conduct. Prosecutors say he gave his son the rifle used in the shooting as a Christmas gift, despite being told by law enforcement to keep guns away from him. The jury was selected from Hall County instead of Barrow County because of extensive pretrial publicity in Barrow County. The trial is being held at the Barrow County Courthouse in Winder.
