We discuss the latest spectacle lenses, monitoring techniques like axial length measurement, and various treatment options available at our clinic. [00:00-00:18] there, at our clinic here at Waverley Eye Care, we feel that your child's vision is really, really critical. And one of the things that we focus on is myopia management. And what that means is that myopia is a growing thing in pre and early teen kids. And myopia is a condition where basically kids might need glasses for far away. Now, myopia is not normal. [00:18-00:42] And myopia is increasing dramatically in all kids all throughout the world. And there's various reasons for that that I'm not going to go into. there's things that we can do to help slow down the progression of myopia. We can slow it down by over 50 percent in kids. And we've got lots of different ways. And one way we can do that is with spectacle lenses. And we make an effort to have a conversation with all parents of kids that are myopic about myopia management options for their kids. [00:42-01:07] And in fact, this is the standard of care for optometrists recommended by the Canadian Association of Optometrists, the World Council of Optometrists, the Australian Association of Optometrists worldwide. And if your child's myopic and you're seeing an eye doctor and they did not have a conversation, of myopia management and how to slow down that myopia with your child, then they're not meeting the standard of care. And I would highly recommend you find a doctor that will have that conversation with you. [01:07-01:27] Now, the parents that do have that conversation, they're finding out that there's more and more myopia management spectacle lenses on the market. they're not all the same. Some are better than others. Some work better. And these lenses are not inexpensive. And so if you're investing in this technology to get the best outcome for your child, you want to make sure you have the best lens. [01:27-02:10] Now, there's a recent study that came out that looked at the 2 leading lenses out there, the MiyoSmart lens and the Stellest lens. And we use both these lenses in our clinic. And we do have a little bit more success with the Stellest lens in our particular situation. So that's the one we will often recommend to our patients at this point. But this study, it compared the two and said, hey, which of these 2 lenses is better or are they the same and the outcome of the study is over 2 years they found that the myosmart and the steles lens they both work equivalently and so if you're getting either of these lenses they're both great choices like i said in our clinic at this point in time We're finding that the Stellest lens outperforms the MiyoSmart lens a little bit for the kids that are using that. [02:11-02:32] And the 3 key things that we do to make sure that you have the best outcome for your child in myopia management. Number one is we watch these children very, very closely. We like to follow them about every 3 to 4 months. Number 2, we measure axial length. Axial length is the most accurate and the most sensitive way measure the eye growth. and know if the treatment is working. [02:32-02:53] It works way better than just measuring the prescription. And number 3, we will modify the treatment depending on how it's working for your child and introduce other treatments. And we have all the treatments available for myopia management, including low-dose atropine, contact lenses, ortho-K lenses, and all the spectacle lenses that are available.
