(How East-Asian Theology Provides a Necessary Corrective to the Western Church's Understanding of Creation Care) The term 'stewardship' has become the central plank in many Western attempts to construct a biblical environmental ethic. This paper challenges the use of this term as a theological basis for environmental ethics and seeks to expose the colonial legacies that render it both inadequate and detrimental to the life of the planet. This paper will explore East-Asian perspectives-ranging from ancient Chinese philosophy to Japanese pop-culture-and propose an East-Asian hermeneutic that draws upon Old Testament horticultural imagery, finds its fulfilment in Jesus Christ, and allows for a re-imagining of faith in the midst of the climate crisis. Mark Nam is an Anglican Priest in the Diocese of Bristol. He was born in South Wales but is originally of Chinese descent. Mark is a member of the College of Archbishop’s Evangelists and a Minority Ethnic Champion for Bristol Diocese. He is also an executive member of AMEN (the Anglican Minority Ethnic Network) and the founder of The Teahouse, a group that supports ministers with Chinese heritage. Previously Mark was a pastor at a large church in Hong Kong. He has lectured on Diversity at Trinity College, Bristol and East-Asian Theology at Rippon College, Cuddeston. Mark has contributed to BBC Radio Bristol and has written for Preach Magazine. Married to Kayi, they have three young children. He can be found on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram as @marknam.
