Atomic Liquors, located at 917 E Fremont Street in Downtown Las Vegas, is the city's oldest freestanding bar, known for its rich history and vintage, "space age" vibe. It originally opened in 1954 (though sometimes cited as 1952) and remains a popular, low-key spot for both locals and tourists today. The bar got its name because, in the 1950s, patrons would go up to the roof to watch the mushroom clouds from atomic bomb tests at the Nevada Test Site, about 65 miles away, while sipping "atomic cocktails". It holds the distinction of having Las Vegas's first-ever tavern license for selling packaged liquor and operating an onsite bar. In its heyday, it was a popular after-show hangout for celebrities who wanted to avoid the Strip, including the Rat Pack, Clint Eastwood, and Barbra Streisand (who had a favorite bar stool marked with a star). The bar has been featured as a filming location in several TV shows and movies, including the film Casino, an episode of the original Twilight Zone, and the car crash scene in The Hangover. Anthony Bourdain also filmed a segment of his show Parts Unknown at the bar. After the original owners, Joe and Stella Sobchik, passed away in the early 2010s, the bar closed temporarily. It was purchased by new owners and reopened in 2012 after a renovation that restored its vintage glory. During the renovation, a hidden floor safe from the 1950s, containing old receipts, was discovered and is now displayed under a glass cover in the floor. #lasvegas #downtownlasvegas #atomicbombs
