San Diego, CA – March 22, 2025 – A chaotic night in San Diego saw two police pursuits unfold at the same time, leading to freeway shutdowns, multiple suspect evasions, and an unfortunate crash involving a police K-9 handler and a family in a minivan. Both incidents were connected to burglary suspects attempting to evade law enforcement. First Pursuit: White BMW Escapes After Collision The series of events began around 9:00 PM when officers pursued two burglary suspects in separate vehicles in the South County area. One of the fleeing vehicles, a white BMW sedan, led authorities on a high-speed chase that resulted in a collision on the offramp of Interstate 805 North and El Cajon Boulevard. An SDPD K-9 handler, involved in the pursuit, rear-ended a minivan carrying a family, including several children. Emergency responders transported several occupants of the minivan to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The chase continued until the white BMW was found abandoned at the I-8 and Texas Street offramp. SWAT resources were deployed, prompting the temporary shutdown of I-8 Westbound at I-805 for approximately 30 minutes. However, upon securing the scene, authorities found the vehicle empty, and no suspects were apprehended in the "Mission Valley pursuit.” Second Pursuit: Meanwhile, another pursuit involving a white Ford Escape concluded in East Lake, where suspects fled on foot along Otay Lakes Parkway. SDPD’s helicopter, ABLE, played a crucial role in the search, detecting a heat signature in a dumpster. Officers later found two suspects hiding inside. In total, four out of five suspects were apprehended, while one remains at large. Authorities recovered cash at the scene, linking the suspects to the burglary investigation. Several businesses in the area were forced to close temporarily while law enforcement conducted their search. Ongoing Investigation: SDPD continues its investigation into both pursuits, with a focus on locating the remaining suspect from the East Lake incident and identifying those involved in the Mission Valley pursuit. Officials have not released further details on the extent of injuries sustained in the minivan crash but assure the public that those affected are expected to recover. Both pursuits are directly linked to burglary suspects attempting to evade capture, and SDPD urges anyone with information to come forward. Residents and business owners impacted by the chases are encouraged to report any relevant details to SDPD.
