Thanks for watching the first video in my rivers series. Be sure to keep an eye out for videos on the Middle and Lower course of the river severn. I’m currently at the source of the River Severn in the Plynlimon Hills and I am going to take you on a journey from here to the Bristol channel. So I am starting this journey at the source of the river Severn at around 610m in the Plynlimon hills and I’m going to track the long profile of the river all the way to the Bristol channel. The source of the Severn starts in this boggy moorland and as it is fairly close to the west coast of Wales it receives a lot of rainfall throughout the year. The bog soaks up all the water and then gradually leads into small streams that start the river Severn. I’m currently in the Upper course of the river and what we tend to see is V-shaped valleys where the water has eroded in a downward direction. The water is moving at a slower velocity compared to the lower course due to greater friction in the shallower channels. We also usually see interlocking spurs in the upper course, which is when projections of high land alternate from side to side of the valley. Other features you will find in the upper course are waterfalls and gorges which are formed when you have different densities of rock that erode away at different rates.
