Single Detached Buttonhole is uncorded and it worked back and forth. It has a much finer mesh than Corded Detached Buttonhole. However, a lot of people try this stitch worked flat and soon abandon it because they find it to be too 'lumpy'' or 'uncontrollable'. To compensate for this, they'll use a long straight stitch return row along the back. This video demonstrates that you don't have to do that, and you can make the stitches point the same way, as can be achieved by working it spirally, WITHOUT the need for a wasteful return row at the back. This method of working has also assisted me in achieving better, more regulated stitch formation with other Buttonhole family of stitches, e.g. Ceylon stitch, that you can see an example of in this video. In fact, worked this way, you might be mistaken for thinking its actually ladder stitch. Furthermore, this method saves on precious thread which is in keeping with the Elizabethan principles of embroidery.
