After nearly a year away, Norfolk & Western 611 finally returned home to the Virginia Museum of Transportation on September 26, 2018. This was the locomotive's only mainline run of the entire year. With so much uncertainty clouding 611's operational future, I decided I should chase this hopefully-not-the-last run just to be safe. So I was up and headed to Spencer at 4am to meet the rumored 7:30am departure, which left me standing in Yadkin chatting with other railfans for some time since they didn't actually depart until around 9:30am. Luckily they stopped at Pomona Yard long enough for me to get some brunch. 611 had been scheduled to travel into Roanoke via the former Virginian from Hurt, but a delayed freight on the line forced her back onto the home rails of the N&W from Lynchburg. If this was indeed her final run, it was a fitting end as she stormed once more up Blue Ridge grade and then rolled by her birthplace at Roanoke's East End Shops under the light of a rainbow, arriving at the VMT around 6pm. It was a great run, definitely worth missing class for. Huge thanks to the men & women of the VMT, NCTM, Fire Up 611, and Steam Operations Corp for all their hard work restoring & operating the J. I hope they get to bring her out on the rails again soon.
