Navigating a New Sexuality During Menopause - Addressing Vaginal Dryness and Low Libido

In this episode we meet Avril. She had her first menopausal symptom in her early 40’s when she experienced a profound bout of insomnia. She didn’t understand why, as there appeared to be no particular cause, but now, looking back, she recognizes the timing and relates it to the start of perimenopause. She never did experience the most common symptom of hot flashes, but she did end up in a severe clinical depression that she was totally unprepared for, as well as regular anxiety attacks. The worst symptom that started in her late 40s and continues to this day is a loss of libido, which she continues to find distressful. Despite being open about it, and seeking help, including from a specialty clinic, nothing has really ever helped. On the plus side, while she wonders what would have been different if she had received menopausal hormone therapy, Avril enjoys being older particularly because she finds herself more balanced and much less concerned with others’ opinions of her.
